I had the opportunity to play a live set at Absolute Vinyl & Stereo[1]https://goo.gl/maps/ftMh74mukz9n2NzQ8 on Saturday and I had a blast. I’d never really aspired to be a DJ, and certainly never had the chance to practice mixing live vinyl music, it’s safe to say mistakes were made.

I had an early evening opening set and really the only instructions I had were the event is dance music focused. I figured most people wouldn’t have heard of either CTI or KUDU but they would have some familiarization with the standard Grover Washington Jr., Bob James, and Esther Phillips tracks, and of course Idris Muhammad. So as I pulled the records from my shelves, I focused on tracks I thought most would have never heard.

The only problem, limited time and long jazz tracks. I do have some CTI/KUDU singles, which often have shorter edits, but not always. To resolve the problem I grabbed a few of the CTI compilations

  1. “Fire Into Music”[2]https://www.discogs.com/release/1645044-Various-Fire-Into-Music – US Release
  2. “A Taste Of CTI/Kudu Vol. 1″[3]https://www.discogs.com/release/3333544-Various-A-Taste-Of-CTIKudu-Vol-1 – Canadian release with almost identical tracklist to #1.
  3. “Fire Into Music”[4]https://www.discogs.com/release/1778887-Various-Fire-Into-Music – German release which has almost entirely different track listing from #1
  4. “The Sound Of Things To Come”[5]https://www.discogs.com/release/2817289-Various-The-Sound-Of-Things-To-Come – UK release.

In the following playlist are the original artist albums, except where noted.

Questions I’ve had Already

  • Was the set recorded?
    No.
  • Can you make a Spotify playlist?
Nope at least here in the US 3-tracks are not on Spotify
  • Will you do a mix of the tracks?
If there is enough interest, it would go on youtube though as I don’t have licenses to cover publishing here. Leave a comment below or CONTACT US

Thanks to @disco.witch.is.here and the other DJ’s for setting this up, proving the equipment etc. I’m hoping Doug invites me back to do another set. There are so many great tracks from the CTI/Kudu catalog that would fit into the “dance category”. Find & Follow Absolute Vinyl Records & Stereo on Instagram.

Doug and Chris checking out the tracks!
